Puregold vs SM Supermarket: Saan Mas Sulit Mamili?

Puregold vs SM Supermarket

Puregold or SM Supermarket—saan mas sulit mamili? The useful answer comes from the total cost of your own shopping list at the branches you can actually use.

This guide provides a repeatable basket test. It does not name a universally cheaper chain or claim a current branch price survey. Prices, stock, pack sizes, and promotions need to be checked for your shopping date.

Start with a Fixed 10-Item Basket

Choose products you buy regularly, not products selected because one store happens to have them on sale. Include the same brand, variant, and pack size whenever possible. Keep food and household supplies in the comparison if both are part of your normal trip.

Rice, cooking oil, eggs, milk, coffee, canned goods, detergent, soap, tissue, and dishwashing liquid can be starting points. Replace them with what your household actually uses. Do not count an unavailable item as a zero-peso purchase.

Compare Package Sizes Using Unit Prices

Unit price = package price ÷ package quantity. Convert both quantities to the same unit before comparing. For a price per kilogram, divide the price by grams and multiply by 1,000.

Hypothetical offerCalculationPrice per kilogram
500 g pack at ₱90₱90 ÷ 500 × 1,000₱180
800 g pack at ₱136₱136 ÷ 800 × 1,000₱170

The second pack is cheaper per kilogram in this illustration, but it costs ₱46 more at checkout. It is useful only if the larger quantity fits your budget and will be used. These figures are examples, not actual Puregold or SM prices.

Separate Exact Matches from Substitutions

A 1-liter bottle and a 900-milliliter bottle are different quantities. Different detergent concentrations, rice varieties, meat cuts, and product grades may also be unsuitable for a simple price-only ranking.

If your usual item is unavailable, record the replacement clearly. You can compare the final shopping trip, but do not describe that result as the price difference for identical products. Check eggs by size or grade and meat by cut and whether bones are included.

Include the Cost of Getting Your Groceries

Illustration: Basket A costs ₱1,850 with ₱100 round-trip transport. Basket B costs ₱1,920 with ₱20 transport. The total is ₱1,950 for A and ₱1,940 for B. The apparently more expensive basket is ₱10 cheaper after travel.

For online orders, select your delivery area before comparing and add delivery, service, packaging, or other checkout charges that apply. An advertised shelf price and a delivered total are different measures.

Check Promotions Without Expanding Your List

Read the applicable dates, eligible products, minimum spend, quantity limits, and payment conditions. Subtract a discount only if you qualify. A reward for a future visit should be recorded separately from money saved on today’s bill.

If a bundle adds an item you will not use, compare the price of the items you actually need. Buying more to reach a minimum spend may increase the total even when a discount applies.

Make a Decision After the Whole Basket

Buy at one store when its total is lower or the difference is too small to justify another trip. Split the purchase only when the combined saving exceeds the extra fare, fuel, delivery charges, and time you are willing to spend.

Keep receipts from two or three comparable trips. One sale day does not establish a permanent winner. Update your comparison when your usual products, household needs, or shopping location change.

For purchases in flexible fresh-food quantities, see our palengke versus supermarket guide. To turn a meal plan into quantities, use the family grocery-list worksheet.

Where to Check and What the Examples Mean

Use the selected branch’s shelf labels, current promotional terms, and final receipt as your price record. For SM online shopping, start with the official SM Markets store. For agricultural price context, consult Department of Agriculture price monitoring and check its coverage and date.
